Cboe’s Exclusive S&P 500 Options License, Extended to 2051, Carries a Royalty Reset Nobody Has Priced

Cboe extended its exclusive S&P 500 options license through 2051, but the 2027 royalty reset is undisclosed until February guidance.

Cboe Global Markets and S&P Dow Jones Indices signed a 25-year extension of the exclusive license behind SPX options, announced September 29. The headline is the term. The number that matters is missing.

  • The term: Cboe keeps the exclusive right to trade S&P 500 Index options through 2051. The relationship dates to 1983.
  • The 2026 royalty: per Cboe’s 8-K exhibit, “no impact on the 2026 royalty fee terms.”
  • The 2027 royalty: the exhibit says “the updated royalty fee terms will begin in 2027.” The size of the change is not disclosed.
  • Cboe’s gloss: the 2027 fees are expected to have minimal impact on net revenue growth, and later adjustments should be smaller than the 2027 reset.
  • The next disclosure: Cboe will give 2027 organic revenue guidance in February, with fourth-quarter earnings.

Read the Last Two Bullets Together

A company that expects “minimal impact” does not usually describe the later adjustments as “smaller than the 2027 reset.” The second sentence concedes that 2027 is the big step.

The business at stake is large. SPX options traded a record 970.6 million contracts in 2025, with average daily volume up 25% to 3.9 million, the fourth straight record year. Cboe cannot move that volume anywhere else.

The 25-year term is what Cboe bought. The price is the royalty, and Cboe has chosen to keep it out of view until February.

Where BTN Stands

Locking exclusivity for 25 years is the right call for Cboe and a defensible one for S&P DJI. The tokenized options language is a placeholder: neither side named a product, a platform or a date.

Investors should treat the 2027 royalty as the actual news and wait for the February number before treating the extension as a growth catalyst.
